Lance K. Josal

Lance K. Josal FAIA is currently Chairman of CallisonRTKL Inc., one of the most influential and recognized architectural design practices in the world. A 37-year veteran of the practice, Lance ascended in the ranks of the firm, was named President and CEO in 2009 and is currently guiding the transition to new leadership in the role of Chairman. During his term as President and CEO, he navigated some of the most challenging economic times for the profession in recent memory leading RTKL to continued growth and prosperity nationally and internationally and growing to a top 5 ranking of US design firms per Design Intelligence. He is especially proud of the leadership team he has put in place and the growth of women in the ranks of senior leadership within the firm.

Lance has played an integral role in guiding CallisonRTKL’s expansion into new and emerging markets, with 20 offices worldwide including CallisonRTKL’s most recent offices of Manchester, Mexico City, Hong Kong and Berlin and was instrumental in the acquisition and merging of the Callison firm with RTKL Associates in 2014. Under his leadership, the CallisonRTKL design brand has received recognition and numerous design awards for its large-scale design around the globe especially high density real estate developments in the US, Asia and the Middle East.

He is a recognized leader in the planning and design of mixed-use developments, and understands the power that mixed-use complexes have as catalysts for urban growth and revitalization. Lance’s work is recognized for the way it strengthens the urban fabric, reinforces the public realm, and advances the mixed-use typology to create vibrant city centers. Projects such as City Crossing in Shenzhen, China, and LA Live in downtown Los Angeles exemplify CallisonRTKL’s blend of urbanism, design and sense of place to create sustainable destinations that enhance quality of life.

A frequent speaker, design award juror and author on large-firm management issues and mixed-use development, Lance and his work have been recognized by local and state AIA chapters, the APA, MIPIM, ICSC, the Congress for New Urbanism, Urban Land Institute and serves as an Executive Board Member of the AIA Large Firm Roundtable. In March 2009, he was elevated to the American Institute of Architects’ College of Fellows in San Francisco for his contribution to advancing the profession of architecture.

A graduate of North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota, Lance holds Bachelor Degrees in both Art (’77) and Architecture (’78). Throughout his career, Lance has maintained a relationship with his alma mater, serving as a founding member of the North Dakota State University Department of Architecture Advisory Board and was awarded its Alumni Achievement Award in 2016. As a result of Lance’s work to establish a permanent fundraising position for the College of Architecture, the university was able to raise its position on the Design Intelligence Rankings for all US undergraduate architecture programs from unranked in 2007 to third in the Midwest and 18th overall just one year later. Lance started his career in Dallas in 1978, moved to help grow the Chicago office in 2006 and came back home to Dallas in 2012 where he and his wife Karen have lived ever since.
